Earnings Card Maker

From revenue to net income, where the money went, on one card. Type the numbers and the flow chart draws itself, ready to save at X (16:9) or Instagram (4:5) size.

How to use it

  1. Set the company, period, currency and unit, e.g. $ + B (billions).
  2. Copy revenue, cost of revenue, operating expense lines, other income and tax from the income statement in the earnings release.
  3. Add revenue by segment to draw the revenue mix on the left. Leave it blank to skip.
  4. Add last year’s revenue and net income for the same quarter to show year-over-year change.
  5. Hit Save PNG to download the card.

Reading the card

Grey is revenue, green is profit, red is cost. Band thickness is proportional to dollars, so you can see at a glance which cost eats the most profit.

  • Gross margin = gross profit ÷ revenue: how profitable the product itself is.
  • Operating margin = operating income ÷ revenue: what’s left of the core business after R&D, marketing and overhead.
  • Net margin = net income ÷ revenue: the final share after interest, taxes and everything else.

Watch out for

Companies label and group income-statement lines differently. Some put depreciation in cost of revenue, others break out one-off charges. Use reported (GAAP) figures, and if you use adjusted (non-GAAP) numbers, say so in the source field. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
